Palm Tempelton Philosophy of Learning

Introduction

1.1.    Our Philosophy of Learning

  • All individuals have a right to learn and a right to literacy, so they can better participate in their community.
  • We treat each one according to their ability helping them reach their potential.
  • We use a learner-centred approach whereby learners decide what they want to learn.
  • We believe that every place is a learning place.
  • We value a tutorial partnership where learner and tutor respect and learn from each other.
  • We value the contributions learners, volunteers and partners make in the learning.

Palm Tempelton Learning

At Palm Tempelton we strive to develop the best VAK centre in South Africa, through:

  • Remedial Classes – assist stream
  • Study Methods – when required
  • Whole Brain Development BY WAY OF A RANGE OF EXERCISES
  • All classes taught either VisuallyAuditory or Kinetically
  • We make use of auricular therapies and support therapies

1.2.    What is a VAK (Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic) centre?

VAK is a popular pedagogical approach centred on the uses of three main sensory receivers: Visual (eyes), Audio (ears), Kinaesthetic (movement) to determine the dominant learning style of an individual. It was originally devised in the 1920s to assist teaching children with dyslexia.

Subsequently, this has been more widely applied and its relevance established. VAK centres use all modalities of learning to approach the student’s school work so that a student sees, hears as well as feels (by touch) what they are learning in their being.

1.3.    What is Auricular Therapy?

The protocol is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine where the aim is to restore the proper flow of energy (Qi) which in turn enables the organ systems of the body to function optimally.

Similar to the hands and feet all organ systems are represented in the ears. Needles are inserted into only 5 points which makes is a simple but extremely effective way of returning the body to homeostasis (balance) and health.

The following 5 points are treated during a session:

  • The sympathetic point balances the sympathetic (fight/flight) and para-sympathetic (rest and recover) nervous systems, alleviates pain and has a relaxing effect on internal organs.
  • The Shen Men point is beneficial to relieve anxiety and illness related to the heart such as high blood pressure. It also relieves insomnia and depression.
  • The liver stores blood at night that nourishes the eyes, muscles and organs of the lower abdomen. By detoxing the liver these organs can function optimally bringing about clearer vision, less stiffness in muscles and alleviates gynaecological problems.
  • The kidney point helps to balance emotions, imbalances of the ears, fear, etc. It plays a role in the aging process, eliminates toxins and is associated with aspects such as growth and development.
  • The lung point balances the organ system of the lungs which is involved not only with respiration but also handles elimination of toxins, assists with the immune system, and protects the body from disease.
  • LEARNING DIFFICULTIES –
  • Learning difficulties such as dyslexia, ADD and ADHD can be addressed by correcting the position of certain cranial bones and clearing underlying emotional- and / or mental issues.

Parenting Responsibilities

Parental responsibility is integral to the success of our private school community. We
believe in fostering a collaborative learning environment where parents actively
engage with their child’s education. Your involvement is crucial, as it strengthens the
partnership between home and school, ensuring a holistic development for your
child. Attend school events, participate in parent-teacher conferences, and stay
connected with our online platforms to support your child’s educational journey.
Together, we can create a nurturing and enriching experience for every student.

1. School Events Participation:

  • Attend school events such as parent-teacher meetings, cultural
celebrations, and sports days to stay connected with your child’s school life.

2. Parent-Teacher Conferences:

  • Actively participate in scheduled parent-teacher conferences to discuss
your child's progress, address concerns, and collaborate on strategies
    for improvement.

3. Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Explore volunteering opportunities within the school, whether it’s
assisting in classrooms, organizing events, or contributing your skills to
    enhance the learning environment.

4. Online Platforms Engagement:

  • Stay connected through our online platforms, where you can access important announcements, view your child’s assignments, and engage in discussions with teachers and other parents.

5. Homework Support:

  • Provide a supportive environment at home for your child’s learning by assisting with homework, encouraging a study routine, and communicating with teachers about any challenges or successes.

6. Participate in Parent Workshops:

  • Join workshops organized by the school to gain insights into various aspects of your child’s education, from academic subjects to social and
    emotional development.

7. Encourage Extracurricular Activities:
